THE ART OF DOING NOTHING.

Niksen is a Dutch word for the simple act of doing nothing — taking a moment to slow down, be still, and let yourself just be.

It’s also the idea behind Niksen Moods Studio. I believe our homes should make space for that feeling: somewhere to exhale, settle in, and enjoy the everyday.

My approach is personal and collected, bringing together colour, texture, thoughtful pieces and a little bit of the unexpected to create spaces that feel lived-in, welcoming and uniquely yours.

Because a beautiful home doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to feel good to be in.

One of my favourite (and completely free) design exercises is collecting paint swatches.

Every time you find yourself in a hardware store, take a minute to wander over to the paint aisle and choose a few colours that catch your eye. Don’t overthink it—just pick the ones you’re naturally drawn to.

Do this over a few months.

Eventually, you’ll start to notice patterns. Maybe you always reach for warm earthy tones, moody greens, soft creams, or deep charcoals (like me!) Those recurring colours are telling you something about what makes you feel at home.

If you’ve ever said, “I don’t know what my style is,” this is a wonderful place to begin.

Design Concept No. 02 | The Airbnb Host

Meet Derek & Angela.

They have an underused basement with a private entrance and a vision of turning it into an Airbnb suite. The challenge? Creating a space that feels like a destination—not just a place to sleep.

This fictional design concept explores how thoughtful space planning, layered textures, and intentional styling can transform an open basement into a warm, welcoming retreat that guests will remember long after checkout.

For this concept, I focused on:
• Defining separate sleeping and living zones
• Softening the hard surfaces with rugs, textiles, and warm wood tones
• Creating a boutique-style atmosphere through lighting, artwork, and curated furnishings
• Designing with both guest comfort and long-term durability in mind

This couple had just purchased their dream home and had already invested in a few key pieces: their sofa, dining table and accent chairs.

They reached out because they needed help with what came next. The details that would make the space feel cohesive—kitchen stools, a living room rug, coffee table, lighting, and a few strategic swaps (including exchanging dining chairs that no longer suited the overall vision).

The biggest challenge wasn’t filling an empty house.

It was bringing together two different design styles into one home that felt authentic to both of them.

After our consultation, we landed on four words that became the foundation for every decision:

Calm. Cozy. Clean. Fresh.

The mood board I’m sharing today became the blueprint for the project. It guided every recommendation, from materials and finishes to colour, texture and contrast.

And because I couldn’t resist… I also imagined what the space could look like if it were entirely up to me. 😉 You’ll notice one of my original paintings made its way into the concept—because I always believe artwork should feel like an intentional part of a home, not an afterthought.

Contrast is one of the easiest ways to add depth to a room.

A space doesn’t need to be filled with colour to feel layered—but it does need moments of tension.

A deep, moody wall against a pale textile.
A graphic stripe beside an organic pattern.
Warm wood against cool colour.
A saturated accent surrounded by quieter tones.

These contrasts create rhythm. They draw the eye around a room, give each element something to play against, and make a space feel collected rather than flat.

Lately, I’ve been especially drawn to bold patterns and high-contrast colour combinations—the kind of rooms that feel a little unexpected, a little collected, and full of personality.

Good design isn’t always about making everything coordinate. Sometimes, it’s about finding the right things to put in conversation with each other.

Design Concept 01 | Empty Nester

Meet Deborah.

She’s recently become an empty nester and is ready for her home to reflect this new chapter of life. Her living room feels dated and disconnected, but she doesn’t want a complete renovation, just thoughtful updates that make the space feel calm, warm, and intentional.

This is a fictional design scenario I created to showcase my design process and the way I approach a space. From rethinking the layout to selecting timeless pieces, every decision was made with intention to create a home that feels both beautiful and lived in.

I loved creating this concept, and I think I might make it a series. 👀

Corner x corner is where I reimagine small spaces in my home, Airbnb, and client projects, proving that even the smallest corners can make a big impact.

This little alcove was never meant to be the star of the room.

It was simply a recessed wall created by the foundation—a forgotten corner that blended into the rest of the space. But because this area serves as both our dining room and an extra sleeping area when the Murphy bed is down, I felt it deserved a little more intention.

Rather than trying to hide the alcove, I chose to highlight it.

A deep, moody paint colour gave the niche depth and character, while two leftover pieces of live-edge wood became floating shelves after a little sanding and stain. All of the styling came from local thrift stores, proving that creating a cozy, curated corner doesn’t have to come with a designer price tag.

Now, when guests pull down the Murphy bed, this little nook becomes their bedside moment—a place for a warm lamp, a favourite book, and a few collected pieces that make the space feel less like a basement and more like home.

✨ Design takeaway: Instead of disguising an awkward architectural feature, consider making it the focal point.

Vintage Loewenstein Armchair

Some pieces don’t need to shout—they simply have good bones.

This vintage Loewenstein armchair is a beautiful example of timeless craftsmanship, featuring sculptural bentwood arms, a warm beech frame, and a sleek black upholstered seat. Its clean, architectural silhouette makes it equally at home in a dining room, home office, reading nook, or entryway.

✨ Original manufacturer’s label remains intact beneath the seat.

As with all vintage pieces, it shows a few signs of a well-lived life, adding to its character without taking away from its beauty.

One of my favourite parts of what I do is the hunt.

Last week, I spent the morning wandering through the Beaverbrook estate sale—coffee in hand, ticket secured for the first entry, hoping to uncover a piece with character and a story to tell.

Estate sales are great places to source pieces. They hold decades of carefully collected furniture and objects that deserve another chapter in someone else’s home.

After walking through every room, one piece kept calling me back: this beautiful vintage teak single daybed.

Its clean lines, warm wood, and timeless design made it impossible to leave behind.

It’s now available through Niksen Moods Studio and ready for its next home. Whether you style it as a daybed, entry bench, reading nook, or guest bed, it’s one of those pieces that quietly elevates a space.

The Latour Project: Reveal #4 ✨

Saving my favourite for last.

The kitchen was the very first space where the vision came together so clearly in my mind. From the beginning, I knew I wanted it to feel warm, inviting, and just a little romantic—a space that encouraged lingering over morning coffee or long conversations around the table.

Here’s what changed:

• Painted the walls in Benjamin Moore Cloud White, creating a bright backdrop that allowed us to introduce richer, moodier furniture tones.
• Designed a cozy banquette with red striped linen curtains that instantly softened the space and gave it so much character.
• Sanded and re-stained the client’s existing round table, then painted the chair frames to match the table base, giving the dining set an entirely new life.
• Installed a pendant light above the table, adding warmth and a romantic focal point.
• Created a wall-mounted recycling station using an IKEA TROFAST unit, freeing up valuable floor space while keeping everyday items organized.
• Finished the room with artwork from the client’s own collection, adding personality and making the kitchen feel uniquely his.

This one is finally finished: Between seasons.

If you’re wondering why this reel doesn’t show every step of the process… it’s because creativity doesn’t always wait for a camera.

I’ve noticed that whenever I feel the urge to paint, I need to follow it while it’s there. Sometimes that means dropping everything and picking up a brush before the moment passes. By the time I think about filming, I’m already halfway into the painting.

I’ve stopped seeing that as a missed opportunity and started seeing it as a reminder: not everything has to be documented to be meaningful.

This piece came together over several spontaneous painting sessions—adding, covering, scratching back, and trusting the process until it finally felt complete.

One thing I’ve been learning lately is that a home shouldn’t stay frozen in time.

This mid-century modern dresser has been with me for years. I loved it, but over the last little while year of living in this home, I started to realize that it no longer reflected the way my partner and I actually live. So, I let it go.

Not because there was anything wrong with it (I 🧡 this piece!) —but because our needs have changed.

Until we find the right replacement, I’ve simply reconfigured the living room, and honestly… it already feels lighter and more intentional.

I think we sometimes assume our homes need major renovations to feel different. But often, the biggest shift comes from paying attention. Checking in with yourself. Asking what still works, what doesn’t, and giving yourself permission to evolve.

Your home should grow with you.

Sometimes all it takes is moving a few things around—or saying goodbye to one piece that no longer fits the life you’re building.

Design isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating a space that supports who you are today.

The Latour Project: Reveal #3 ✨

The living room is where we unwind, recharge, and spend our quiet moments at home. For this space, the goal was simple: create a room that felt brighter, calmer, and visually balanced without adding unnecessary clutter.

Here’s what changed:

• Painted the walls in Benjamin Moore Cloud White, bringing more light and continuity to the space.
• Gave the fireplace mantel a fresh coat of paint—a simple update that completely refreshed the focal point of the room.
• Added a mirror above the mantel to reflect natural light from the window and create a greater sense of depth and openness.
• Removed the undersized TV stand and mounted the television on the wall for a cleaner, more intentional look.
• Installed an asymmetrical shelf that stretches from the TV toward the window wall, helping anchor the television while creating visual interest and a place to display one of his many plants.
• Added sheer linen curtains to soften the room and bring texture.
• Introduced a linen pendant lantern in the corner, echoing the softness of the curtains while adding warmth and another layer of light.

One of the biggest lessons in this room is that a space doesn’t need more furniture or more décor to feel complete. Sometimes it’s about carefully considering scale, light, and where the eye naturally wants to travel.

The result is a living room that feels bright, cohesive, and restful—a place to sit back, relax, and enjoy being home.

One of my obsessions has long been about tiles. Not just for kitchen backsplashes or bathroom floors, but everywhere.

On fireplaces. Coffee tables. Entryways. Outdoor patios. Kitchen islands. Unexpected corners that suddenly become a focal point.

What I love most about tile is its ability to inject personality into a space. Colour, texture, pattern, shine, imperfection—there are endless ways to make a home feel unique through the thoughtful use of tile.

In a world of white walls and beige furniture, tile can be a little moment of play.

A chance to be bold. To tell a story. To create something that feels distinctly yours.

The Latour Project: Reveal #2 📚✨

Not every home needs a formal dining room.

My client realized that this space wasn’t serving him. While the room was originally intended for dining, he already had a place to gather and eat in the kitchen. Instead, this room sat largely unused.

So rather than holding onto a space for a purpose that no longer fit his lifestyle, we transformed it into something far more meaningful: a reading nook.

We brought down a beloved wingback chair from upstairs, surrounded it with artwork, family photos, and treasured pieces, and created a cozy corner designed for slowing down and enjoying a good book.

One of my favourite parts of interior design is helping people reclaim underutilized spaces and reimagine them in ways that support how they actually want to live.

When was the last time you looked up?

The ceiling is often called the “fifth wall,” yet it’s one of the most overlooked surfaces in a room.

A painted ceiling can completely change how a space feels. It can add warmth, create intimacy, draw the eye upward, or make a room feel more intentional and cohesive. Sometimes, it’s the very detail that takes a room from nice to memorable.

While white ceilings certainly have their place, they’re not the only option.

Whether it’s a soft colour carried up from the walls, a bold contrast, or a moody tone that wraps the room in atmosphere, a painted ceiling has a way of making a space feel thoughtfully designed.

Proof that some of the most impactful design choices happen where people least expect them: right above their heads.

The Latour Project: Reveal #1 ✨

The entrance sets the tone for the entire home, so we focused on creating a space that feels brighter, calmer, and more functional from the moment you walk through the door.

Here’s what changed:

• Painted the walls in Benjamin Moore Cloud White, a soft, timeless white that now flows throughout the home.
• Replaced the ceiling fixture and updated the light bulbs — a small change with a surprisingly big impact.
• Swapped the folding chair for a bench, creating a more practical spot for putting on and taking off shoes.
• Added a large mirror to reflect natural light and make the space feel more open and expansive.
• Created a dedicated “catch-all” corner by upgrading the lighting while repurposing one of the client’s existing tables.
• Removed artwork that was creating visual clutter, allowing the space to feel more intentional and cohesive.

Sometimes transformation isn’t about adding more—it’s about simplifying, editing, and making every element work a little harder.
